China has seemingly banned sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons

It's no longer possible to purchase Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Nintendo Switch through China's grey market, as it has been pulled as a response to recent Hong Kong protests that have taken place within the game. The Nintendo Switch is available in China thanks to Tencent, but there are only a handful of games that have been approved for sale in the region, due to the country's strict censorship laws and content guidelines.

The Tencent Switch can play games made for other regions through online grey market sellers, but the downside to this is these games lack any online functionality. One game that is affected by this is Animal Crossing: New Horizons and its popular multiplayer mode. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the most popular Switch game of 2020 and the self-isolation period following the Covid-19 pandemic has to increased interest in the game. It's believed that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is partly responsible for the global shortages of Nintendo Switch units, as it has become incredibly difficult to buy a new Switch from online retailers.

Ahmad explains that when this policy is enforced, it’s either because the game has grown so popular that it’s “caught the attention of regulators,” or because the game “has content or user generated content that is deemed to be too offensive or violent.” He also notes that Animal Crossing: New Horizons ticks both boxes, pointing to users who have used the game’s custom design tool to make items in support of Hong Kong protestors. In addition, our site z2u.com has a large quantity of safe Animal Crossing New Horizons Nook Miles Tickets For Sale.

While Taobao can no longer sell the game, Switch owners in the region aren’t entirely out of luck, not even when it comes to importing a physical copy. Ahmad states that prospective buyers can likely still find copies at smaller Mom & Pop stores that deal in imports. They could even potentially reach out Taobao sellers directly, as they will often sell the game privately as well.

The crackdown merely eliminates the most convenient means of getting Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Chinese players can still acquire it from the Nintendo eShop by switching their region; from an independent store that has imported the game without drawing attention to itself; or by contacting a Taobao seller privately and buying it under the table.
