Non-fiction streaming service CuriosityStream released its second quarter results

Non-fiction streaming service CuriosityStream released its second quarter results, reporting revenues of US$15.3 million — up from $12 million in the same period a year earlier — and a net loss of $8.3 million as paying subscribers rose to 20 million in the quarter.

The company said that it has projected revenue of at least US$71 million for the entirety of 2021, which would represent an 80% year-over-year  increase.

Clint Stinchcomb, president and CEO of CuriosityStream said: “CuriosityStream delivered very strong results this quarter. We continue to be solidly on track with our plans for 2021. During the quarter, we grew direct subscribers 56% year-over-year while retaining a higher percentage of users who signed up in Q2 2020 than any other streaming service, based on data from ANTENNA.

CuriosityStream was founded by Discovery creator John Hendricks along with Stinchcomb. The service owes part of its growth to the deals they inked with cable operators. Instead of trying to grow the company on their own, CuriosityStream sold the service to pay-TV operators who then bundle it for their own video and internet customers.

“During the quarter, we grew direct subscribers 56% year-over-year while retaining a higher percentage of users who signed up in Q2 2020 than any other streaming service, based on data from ANTENNA,” said CEO Clint Stinchcomb in a statement. “We continue to deliver unprecedented value to our subscribers and partners in the factual category, having recently announced a landmark partnership with SPIEGEL TV, the leading producer and distributor of high-quality factual content for German-speaking audiences. This partnership bolsters our global reach by adding millions of subscribers in Europe, accelerates our growth through the addition of hundreds of hours of German-dubbed programming to our SVOD service, and extends our brand through the introduction of the Curiosity Channel in German-speaking Europe.”

Among the highlights of the company’s second quarter was the beginning of its partnership with German prodco Spiegel TV and distributor Autentic, expanding CuriosityStream’s reach in Europe with the establishment of a new branded channel. The streamer also added new content, such as the Emmy-nominated 8-part series Secrets of the Solar System, while growing subscribers and keeping churn to the low single digits.

CuriosityStream currently offers two tiers: a Standard tier for $2.99 per month ($20 per year) that offers HD streaming or Premium for $9.99 per month ($70 per year) that offers 4K streaming of 80+ shows. A small number of their episodes are available ad-supported for free.
