Tencent has agreed a three-year domestic digital rights deal for the Chinese Super League

Tencent the Chinese internet giant has agreed a three-year domestic digital rights deal for the Chinese Super League the country’s top-tier soccer competition after a previous contract with PP Sports ended early.

According to a report by Tencent will pay CH ¥ 70 million (US $ 10.71 million) CH ¥ 80 million (US $ 12.24 million) and CH ¥ 90 million (US $ 13.77 million) in the next three seasons for rights.

Rufio Zhu vice president of operations at the China-based Mailman agency commented on the deal: “This represents a positive deal for both sides. The CSL which kicks off in less than a week gains a reputable and experienced partner with Tencent while Tencent adds China’s top-tier of domestic football to its growing roster of premium football content alongside the Premier League.


The rights agreement is said to be non-exclusive which means CSL will be free to agree content agreements with other media rights partners. As part of the deal Tencent will broadcast live matches as well as on-demand coverage and short video highlights of the league games.

Tencent also replaced PP Sports as a Chinese rights holder for the ongoing 2020-21 season of English soccer’s top-tier Premier League after PP Sports was said to have failed to honour a $210.3 million payment for live games and one worth a further $5 million to cover highlights.

The 2021 CSL season is being staged in bio-secure bubbles in Guangzhou and Suzhou and kicks off without reigning champions Jiangsu FC who have ceased operations.

The 2021 CSL season is set to kick off on 20th April.
